SCIENCE TUESDAY ON FRIDAY |
The New York Times Science Section presents articles on many topics ranging from headache cures to quarks. Read the Science Section on Tuesday and come to class on Friday to discuss, explain, or have it explained. The class will include a core group of experts so that the varied articles in the Section can be explored in depth. The course is for people who wish to extend their current understanding of science, who have a wide-ranging interest in contemporary scientific issues, in their implications and in the theory underlying them. Input from class members, with brief presentations from some, is expected. You will be sent an email prior to each meeting indicating major items to be discussed and also web sites that will give articles and information relevant to them. The major items will be based on two or three of the main Science Times articles; discussions will be preceded by presentations from panel members. After this, other articles will be discussed; a vote will be taken on the order in which to do this. Both the content of the articles and their broader implications will be studied; the emphasis of the discussion will be at the discretion of the class. One or two articles may be selected for more detailed follow-up the next week; at that time, these selected articles will be discussed before the current week’s articles. Class members are strongly encouraged to make presentations based on their own study of a topic that interests them. Guests with expertise in the area of discussion are welcome. |
We may also consider other scientific topics that the class may wish to examine. For this it will be useful if copies of a relevant article could be circulated the week before discussion. Input from class members in their areas of knowledge will be specially valued; equally valued will be the inquiring mind willing to investigate a new topic. The core group of specialists taking part in the course will include persons with expertise in biology, chemistry, physics and medicine, amongst other subjects. Leader: David Southgate, a former research scientist with the Sarnoff Corporation. Friday, 9:45 am to 11:45 am, for 10 weeks starting September 28, at the Borough Hall, (General Purpose Room).
