THE MUSES DELIGHT |
Public concerts were pioneered in London at the end of the 17th century, and became a craze in Edinburgh and Dublin as well. Some of the finest musicians and composers in the world, including Handel, Geminiani, J.C. Bach, and Haydn, flocked to the British Isles to enjoy the unprecedented appreciation of musical entertainments. We will survey music as heard in these three cities within the larger context of cultural history: Musick in Georgian Dublin "Beyond the Fanlight"; in Edinburgh, the "Hotbed of the Enlightenment," and in London, "From Handel to Haydn." Leader: John Burkhalter is a practitioner and scholar of music. Monday: 12.30 to 2.30 p.m., 3 weeks beginning September 24.
