Cervantes is the creator of the modern novel. His masterpiece Don Quixote will be read as a text of its time and of all time. The work arises out of the three caste society – Jewish, Christian and Moslem – of 16th century Spain and out of generic fiction – the novels of chivalry, the pastoral novel and the picaresque. In addition to close readings, the seminar will analyze the social and aesthetic contexts that inform Cervantes’ creation. The text used will be the new translation by Edith Grossman; weekly readings will be approximately 120 pages.

Leader: John Hughes is Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese languages and literatures, New York University.

Thursday: 2.00 to 4.00 p.m., 8 weeks beginning September 27
